September 2010
Registrars of Voters
09/23/10 Meeting Minutes
Draft

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 am.
Attendees: Claire Golding, Anne Littlefield (Chair), Lynne Grettum
The August 24 minutes were unanimously approved as written.
Election discussion: The results of the September 13 primary election have been posted; there were no controversial issues. In Princeton, 525 votes were cast out of a possible 2,755; 19% of the electorate turned out to vote. According to Lynne, voter confusion was obvious: primaries are often misunderstood by voters. All the election day volunteer support staff were very helpful. There was only one provisional ballot, for a voter registered as a Libertarian, apparently by mistake. One absentee ballot arrived late and was not counted.
Preparation for next election: Lynne plans to do a little more training of volunteers in preparation for the next election on November 2, as some need a bit more clarity about check-in and check-out procedures. Lynne hopes to become less involved over time, as the election should be handled by the Warden and the Clerk of Elections. The Warden is officially in charge, not the Town Clerk. Wardens are currently Ellen O’Brien, Marcia Sands, and Suzanne Dolphin. Judy Dino is one of the new Clerks. Lynne believes that three shifts of check-in/check-out staff are too many and cause too much upheaval; she would prefer to organize two shifts for continuity and less disruption.
Reaching out to 18-year-olds: Betty’s suggestions for the content and format of a letter encouraging all citizens in town who will turn 18 on or before November 2 to register to vote were reviewed. The letter was drafted and approved. It was agreed that Anne would print the letters, as each individual name must be printed, and Lynne would stuff letters and registration forms in envelopes on Monday, September 27 for mailing that day or the next. If possible, “Dated Material” will be stamped on the envelopes.
Lynne handed Anne and Claire a copy each of the 2010 Town of Princeton Street List.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:01 by a unanimous vote.
